We built this custom S-Type at Simon’s request. The core of the concept was to only use local wood and components. Simon also brought his previous “go-to” guitar and said: “It’s not bad, but I’d like to have it really cool.” No sooner said than done!
First up was the choice of wood and after extensive consultation and discussion, the choice fell on super light red cedar from Hessen for the body in combination with a drop-top maple, maple neck and plum fretboard. The latter both come from Neustadt and have been stored and dryed for decades. Simon then chose the wood himself from our wood storage, which should then make this guitar >his< guitar. Matching the modern S-type concept with local components, the choice of the bridge fell on ABM and locking tuners from Schaller. The 22 stainless steel frets were made by Wagner in Pfozheim and the 3 pickups were handwound by Kloppmann. Simon came up with a pretty cunning circuit with a dummy coil and (for once!) soldered it himself. Since he has been dealing extensively with guitar electronics for a long time, I was happy to leave it to him at his request. The result was a modern and versatile rock guitar that leaves nothing to be desired. Simon is more than happy and we have proved once again that you don't need any exotic woods to build a really good guitar!
